Richard Snelling is a professional repairer and restorer of clocks. He works from an independent workshop in the island of Jersey.
Richard has horology in his blood: his maternal Grandfather was watchmaker Herman Roost, who emigrated to England from Switzerland in 1914.
In fact, it was a Swiss clock that prompted Richard to rediscover his roots. It was a wedding present in need of repair – but there was nobody around to do the job.
As a mechanical engineer in the RAF, Richard took matters into his own hands. He learned horological skills in his free time; from a Cardiff-based clock shop and via a correspondence course with the British Horological Institute.
Richard continued as an amateur horologist for 20 years, before retiring from the RAF after 30 years of service. He started his business in Didcot, Oxfordshire, in 1993.
